Whether it’s a “Live-action” or just an animated film, Disney productions “The Lion King” is the highest-earning movie today. The movie has collected approximately 1.3 billion USD, beating Frozen’s collection of 1.2 billion USD, worldwide.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is a super hit in India nearing to Rs. 150 crores (& growing) at the Box Office. By crossing this line, The Lion King has surpassed Beauty & the Beast (2017), which ranked in $1.26 billion during its release. Reports say, with a total earning of USD 472.8 million only in North America, it is also the second highest-grossing movie of the year domestically, still behind Incredibles 2 & Finding Dory.
The original Hollywood version of the movie has used the voices of stars such as Alfre Woodard, Donald Glover, John Kani, Billy Eichner, Beyonce Knowles, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and John Oliver. In India, Shah Rukh Khan & son Aryan Khan, have dubbed their voices to the characters of Musafa & Simba.
Critics had a negative opinion due to the photorealistic computer animation part of the movie because it hampers with the lion’s emotional expression as in the classic cartoon, yet it not only breaks the record in just 17 days, but is also still continuing to do so.
The real question is now that by how much will The Lion King break the record! The total foreign earning of the movie stands at $768.6 million, largely thanks to its crazy China run that only commenced with a $54.2 million in the opening weekend.
It’s also Disney’s biggest non-Marvel or Star Wars film ever produced, making this year incredibly lucky (profit-wise) for the mass media company. The Lion King, Aladdin, Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel & Spider-Man: Far From Home have made a sum of $1 billion already.
