The 2019 GQ Men of the Year Awards are here! The awards are designed to ‘honor the men and women who shape the worlds cultural landscapes in sports, style, entertainment and more’. None other than the former England soccer captain David Beckham was honored by receiving the prestigious Editor’s special award on September 3, 2019.
Beckham, who retired in 2013 from professional soccer, received the award for his services to the sport over a career of more than two decades that included playing for clubs such as Manchester United and Real Madrid as well as the England National Team.
The footballer also appears as the cover star of the Magazine’s October issue, which is one of this years GQ Men of the Year awards special edition covers.
David Beckham didn’t disappoint on the red carpet, as he wore a timeless black and white tuxedo, seemingly coordinating with his wife Victoria Beckham, who opted for a hot white ensemble.
Asked on what advice he would pass on to his children in the next 20 years, Beckham tells the magazine: ‘To work hard, simple as that. I tell the kids they have to make choices, sometimes give things up. If your friends are going out on a Friday night, maybe you can’t. Maybe you’ve got tennis practice the next day or you are in the studio singing or you’ve got a shoot. That’s where your focus needs to be’.
The sports star businessman and his designer wife and former spice girls star Victoria Beckham have four children. Boys Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz and a daughter, Harper.
He also stated that anything outside of football during his playing career at the time was just ‘a bonus’ as he was so focused on sport.
