A few years ago, Doctor Strange, in his solo adventure, introduced something new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A man without fear of dazzling shining and fascinating with a responsive cap and a beautiful bling object, which was just a firm Infinity Stone, Stephen Strange’s story was a master class with only a shocking amount of pride that somehow survived a vicious gut punch.
The film racked more than $675 million worldwide, but after its release, Marvel was quite cautious in setting up a series. It was until the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con Marvel panel where a title, date of, publication and mysterious connection to one of the new Marvel TV shows were revealed.
We haven’t heard much of the specifics of the development after Comic-Con, but it has been announced recently that Marvel has hired a new writer for the film, the rising star Jade Bartlett. Marvel’s involvement with Bartlett had no official word yet, and it wasn’t clear that she was going to work alone or with the first film writing team of Scott Derrickson, Robert Cargill, and Jon Spaihts.
The release date is 7 May 2021, with filming expected to start this summer.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong will go back with Elizabeth Olsen. Perhaps Rachel McAdams will resume her role as Strange’s former girlfriend, Christine Palmer, but official news of her return is missing.
Much has changed since Doctor Strange’s first film was released in 2016. Since then, Stephen Strange’s Benedict Cumberbatch stars in Thor’s supportive roles: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Doctor Strange franchise will enter Phase 4 of Marvel, with more fantasy-infused films such as The Eternals. It is expected to tie into the Disney+ series for Marvel’s two other great magical characters, Scarlet Witch and Loki.
Marvel did not make any definite statements about the plot or general concept of the movie, but we know that Scarlet Witch will be a crucial player. Former director Scott Derrickson was interested this time in making a weirder, more horror-driven film. Still, you should not expect it to be a real horror film, mainly as Derrickson will be replaced soon by another director.
