The Bergman Island series has been a cherished classic, of course. But whether you’re new to Bergman films or a long-standing fan, the Criterion Collection’s newly announced releases are sure to please everyone. The first two releases in the series will both present the definitive Bergman films for fans. The BFI’s monthly magazine In Sight announced the titles of more than a dozen films on the Criterion lineup. The second of the two, a Final Cut DVD release of Bergman’s masterpiece The Seventh Seal, will be available in 2021, followed by a Blu-ray/DVD combo version. The first of the two, meanwhile, is a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo set of Wild Strawberries.
The Seventh Seal concerns a knight and his squire who play a game of chess with Death to save their own lives. It’s considered to be Bergman’s most well-known work, and it won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It also topped Sight & Sound’s s decennial critics’ poll. Wild Strawberries follows an old man as he revisits his life on a journey through his youth, becoming increasingly aware of its errors.
