In Captain Phillips, we are given a privileged glimpse into the life of a man who is suddenly thrown into a situation that he could never have imagined. We see the terror on his face as Somali pirates board his ship, and we feel his desperation as he is taken, hostage. This movie does an excellent job of exploring the idea of privilege, and what it means to lose everything that you have worked for. The story of each of the main characters of this movie is incredibly compelling and will leave you emotionally invested throughout.Â
One of the wonderful aspects of this movie is that it does not sugar-coat any aspect. Of course, it presents a stereotypical image of Somali pirates, but it also shows how these stereotypes can be offensive and problematic. This movie is definitely worth watching!

The thoughts on the Captain Phillips series are divided into two parts, one that it should be banned because of its real story and the other one telling its a good series to watch. The viewers who say it’s a good series to watch think this series is written in a way that there will be no more piracy in Somalia because of it.
Is it true that Somali refugees were cast as the Somali pirates?
Yes, it is true. But their appearances are definitely changed for the sake of the movie. Director Paul Greengrass said he wanted to make this movie as real as possible and so he hired some refugees who have never acted before to play the pirates on screen. The cast members of the film are mostly Somali refugees and locals. The crew is also mostly African nationals.
It is a short story that is based on a real one but they have been made to look different so as to make this story more believable. In this series, we see how a captain gets captured in Somalia but in the other film, we see how he hijacks a ship. It is also different because it is about one man’s experience rather than about the experience of the whole crew.
Who do directors think is responsible for the hijacking of the ship?
In the film, we get to see why Captain Phillips was captured, and it is because of his refusal to give information about the cargo on his ship. This is one of the ways they see as responsible: because he knew that pirates could find what they were looking for on his ship. The other reason is that he tried to kill them by firing the shot. It is said that Captain Phillips ignored the pirates and this is what caused the trouble for him.
