The series is based on the first installment of Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy, The Golden Compass. It follows Lyra Belacqua as she travels through a parallel universe called “the North” to explore what happens after death and where her mother has disappeared to. About His Dark Materials Season 3:

The plot is followed up by two sequels. The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. These books won even more prestigious awards than their predecessor and were global successes. A film adaptation of The Golden Compass was released in 2007 but failed at both the box office and critically. A television series produced by BBC One and HBO has been announced with an expected release date of 2021 or 2022.

Ratings:

Season one delivered an average viewership rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is pretty high across the board when compared to other critically acclaimed series. Though it’s worth noting that critics were more favorable towards the show with an 84% score. The show has received many positive reviews from critics.
