The series is based on the first installment of Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy, The Golden Compass. It follows Lyra Belacqua as she travels through a parallel universe called “the North” to explore what happens after death and where her mother has disappeared to. About His Dark Materials Season 3:
The Golden Compass was published in 1995 and won the Carnegie Medal for children’s fiction among other prestigious awards. The plot follows Lyra, a young girl who is living at Jordan College during an alternate version of World War I where adults are referred to as “Gobblers.” She comes into possession of a magical instrument called an alethiometer and must travel to the far north in order to save her best friend’s father.

The release date for the 3rd season of His Dark Materials has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be on screens in 2022.

Production for His Dark Materials season three is currently underway with filming taking place in Cardiff, Wales. In fact, the cast was seen recently at a read-through of one of the upcoming episodes which will likely be released later this year or early 2022.

Awards:
The first season of His Dark Materials was nominated for a BAFTA Award in 2019. The first two seasons of His Dark Materials were both nominated for several awards, but it is yet to be seen whether they will receive any nominations in the future.
Revenue:
The first season of His Dark Materials brought in £18 million for the BBC on its initial release.
The Starring Cast:
HBO has confirmed that they have acquired all rights to His Dark Materials and are planning on releasing the show from this point forward. At present, it is not known who will be cast in new seasons of His Dark Materials but reports indicate that a number of talented individuals have been approached for roles including James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson – both actors are expected to reprise their roles as Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter respectively.
The Plot:
The plot of the new season is expected to center around Lyra’s discovery that her father may still be alive, despite claims in His Dark Materials book one (Northern Lights) that Lord Asriel was killed.
The plot is followed up by two sequels. The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. These books won even more prestigious awards than their predecessor and were global successes. A film adaptation of The Golden Compass was released in 2007 but failed at both the box office and critically. A television series produced by BBC One and HBO has been announced with an expected release date of 2021 or 2022.
Ratings:
Season one delivered an average viewership rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is pretty high across the board when compared to other critically acclaimed series. Though it’s worth noting that critics were more favorable towards the show with an 84% score. The show has received many positive reviews from critics. They enjoyed that it stayed true to its source material. It brought Pullman’s novel alive on-screen while also praising certain plot elements (such as Lyra being portrayed by an older actress compared to the books and plot changes).

The show has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. However, the general consensus is that it’s a strong adaptation of Pullman’s trilogy. It succeeds in bringing its plot to life on screen while maintaining the spirit of the novels. Fans have praised certain elements such as Lyra being portrayed by an older actress. She was compared to the books and some plot changes, such as her friendship with a boy.
Expectations:
The show is expected to perform well in its UK release. However, it remains unclear how much of an audience will tune into His Dark Materials. The first season premiered on BBC One and HBO simultaneously. It had a total viewership of over 18 million after only two episodes had aired. It made it one of the most-watched premieres for any series on both channels. Season two, however, premiered with a total viewership of less than one million. The show has since been canceled and will not continue beyond its second season.
