Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight | Show Renewed For New Season

The Kung Fu Panda The Dragon Knight series has been renewed on Netflix for a second season. The show follows Po as he tries to figure out his new life out, alongside his friends and the Furious Five. Netflix’s original animated series has become a huge hit with critics and audiences alike, thanks in part to the iconic voice performances by seasoned Hollywood veterans like James Hong and Jean Smart, but also because its animation is more akin to DreamWorks’s Kung Fu Panda movies than it is to some of Netflix’s other original animated fare such as Turbo Fast or All Hail King Julien.

Thrilled by the show’s success, we reached out to Netflix’s VP of Original Series, Marco J. Viola.  For those who don’t know, what is Kung Fu Panda? Can you give us a brief description of the series? What sort of influences and influences do you draw from? For example, we noticed that some of your other shows have cited movies like Excalibur or some other film as their influence.

What do you hope fans get from the series?

The goal of The Dragon Knight was to create an original story for a new generation of Kung Fu Panda fans. We wanted to satisfy longtime Kung Fu Panda fans but bring in new ones through Po’s dynamic and endearing new character, Li Shan. The journey that Li Shan and Po go on to learn about Li’s past is filled with action, emotion, and humor.

What themes do the Kung Fu Panda The Dragon Knight series explore?

The themes we hope to explore are change, balance, and sticking together as a team. We wanted to create a story that celebrates family, friendship, and loyalty while also showcasing the importance of following your dreams. The Dragon Knight also explores the universal themes of being a kid, finding your place in the world, and growing up.

What are your favorite scenes?

The favorite scene for the producer is when Po goes to meet his biological father for the first time. My favorite scene the writer is when Po’s biological father realizes that Po is stronger than himself. My favorite scene for a director is when Li Shan saves Po from falling off a cliff.
