The North Water is a British-French period drama television series. It is based on the novel of the same name by Ian McGuire, which was published in 2014 and won The Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2015. Filming began at various locations across Northern Ireland in September 2017, including Belfast Harbour’s Titanic Studios and other scenic coastal landscapes such as Cushendall and Portstewart. Season 1 premiered on BBC One in the United Kingdom on Sunday 18th November 2017, with six episodes shown over three weeks.
RELEASE DATE:
The release date for the second season of THE NORTH WATER is expected to be on screens in 2022; however, no official news has been announced.
PRODUCTION:
The first season of THE NORTH WATER was filmed in locations including Scotland, Canada, and Iceland. The second series is expected to have the same production team behind it as well as some new additions.
REVENUE:
The first episode gained an audience of over two million people, with the series averaging around one point eight viewers throughout all ten episodes. As for the revenue, it is expected that THE NORTH WATER will be a hit with audiences and fans. It was one of last year’s best shows, according to critics, in 2020.

RENEWAL STATUS:
Unfortunately, there has been no news on whether or not HBO has renewed THE NORTH WATER for another season. Since the first season was such a hit, though, it would be surprising if they did not.
THE STARRING CAST:
- Andrew Buchan (Sarah)
- Emun Elliott (Henry Drax)
- Brian Vernel (Joe Purcell)
- Hugo Speer (Patrick Sumner)
- Rory Kinnear (Cornelius Hickey)
- Adam Nagaitis (Malcolm “Duke” Reid) will return for the second season. The role of Patrick is yet to be confirmed, but it’s expected that he won’t come back due to his character.
THE PLOT:
Season one of THE NORTH WATER introduced us to the brutal world of Arctic whaling in 1859. The season begins on board a ship headed for Greenland from Scotland with an inexperienced crew but soon enough, things take a dark turn when they pick up two new men: Hickey and Reid. This time around, it’s expected that the crew will be hunting for a white whale.
The plot of season two is unclear at this point but considering that it’s based on the novel “The North Water” by Ian McGuire, there are several theories out there as to what direction they might take with it. There are some speculations about an adaptation of the second book, “The Devil’s Tusk,” but that might not be too likely. In fact, it is most probable that they’ll go with a new storyline and will use both books to develop season two of THE NORTH WATER.
RATINGS:
The first episode drew a total of four million viewers (including streaming) with an average audience share of 17.0% on BBC One in the United Kingdom and 33 percent for the three days after its initial broadcast due to delayed viewing figures being factored into the final consolidated rating data which are usually higher than overnight viewer numbers.
REVIEWS:
Season 1 received mixed reviews from critics but gained a generally positive response among audiences according to audience measurement service overnight figures and social media reaction data collected during its broadcast run. Season one was generally well-reviewed by critics, but it did receive some criticism for its violence which led The Guardian newspaper writer Robert Hanks to describe it as “unfailingly grim” and a “potentially interesting failure,” he also said that it was difficult to watch. According to early reports, Season two is said to be a “fresh take” on the novel and will not follow any of the characters.
