The Witch is an eerie tale of a family who is banished from their Puritan plantation in the 17th century and must fend for themselves in the wilderness. The film, which was released earlier this year, has been praised by critics for its accurate portrayal of life in that period and its use of practical effects.
In a recent interview, director Robert Eggers said that he would never have been able to make the film if it wasn’t for modern technology. “There are plenty of things I would have been unable to do without digital technology,” he said.
“As a filmmaker, you find your ways around the obstacles – and you can always find ways around obstacles. You won’t be able to do every single thing you want to do, but you will figure out a way to get what you need.”
The director said that some people asked him why he used modern technology in the film when the period was so far removed from the present day. Eggers’ response: “Well, that’s just it! You don’t want something that is so far removed from what we know and our experience.

What inspired the director to write The Witch Series?
The series is inspired by the real-life incidents that happened to the director’s family during the Puritan era. The director was inspired to write The Witch series because he wanted to bring a fresh take on his childhood experiences and create a new genre of a horror film.
The Witch has been described as an “unusual” horror film by many critics, sitting somewhere between the type of scary films normally seen today and more traditional examples of horror films.
What technologies did you use in your filmmaking process?
The technology used in this film was mainly digital editing as it helped Eggers complete edits more quickly and efficiently over a shorter period. The director didn’t want the film to look too much like a period piece and wanted modern audiences to be able to connect with the film.
The director said that while many digital post-production elements were used, he wanted to ensure that digital and visual effects only enhanced the story, not taking over. “It’s got a handmade feel, but it’s not crude in any way,” says Eggers. “There are mistakes in there that we wanted there. We wanted it to have a handmade feel.”
How did you make your movie stand out from other horror films?
A central part of The Witch’s success is its unique take on the horror genre. Intentionally created to be “slow” and “quiet”, the film has been widely praised by critics for its slow-burning plot and nuanced performances. Eggers even removed all of the soundtrack’s modern instrumentation, leading to a surprisingly authentic feeling given the film’s genre.
