In a recent interview with the Yellowjackets cast, they discussed some of the burning questions that fans have about the first season. Check out what they had to say!

This is always a tough question, but because the Yellowjackets team is diverse and complex, we all have different favorites. However, if I had to pick a favorite character it would be Jake. He’s the typical underdog I’ve always been rooting for.  The Yellowjackets creators are really happy with how season one turned out. We feel that every episode has pockets of gold we’re not ashamed of – but if we could go back and change something, in particular, it might be the sheer volume of information dumped on the viewers in the finale.

Do you know about the release date of Yellowjackets:

The E10 of S01 will be released on 16 January 2022. Also, the series has been adapted into a manga series called “Yellow Submarine” done by Shinko. The first volume will be released on the online manga service “Hako-Bunko” and the next volumes are in preparation for release in print.

Do you think it will return for another season: I can’t say how the future will unfold, but it seems like there’s a commitment from them to do more. If season two becomes necessary, we’ll be there!

In episode 4 of Yellowjackets, “Dangerous Tendencies”, Meng Huo was able to summon his spirit with the Shichida (Seven Star) technique. Why did this not happen until then? As a member of the Yellowjackets, why don’t you try summoning your spirit right before giving up on your life?

What inspired you to write the Yellowjackets Series?

This series is inspired by Shi Nai’an classical Chinese novel, The Water Margin, which is also known as Outlaws of the Marsh. It is a story about 108 Chinese outlaws who fight against an evil government.

The Yellowjackets OST Volume 1 CD was released on September 11 by VAP. The CD contains the first season’s original soundtrack and others BGM and songs by Shinko. It was also reported that Shinko will be releasing her book titled “Shi Nai’an no Yellowjacket” (Shi Nai An’s Yellow Jacket) based on the series.

Who is your favorite character in the series and why?

My favorite character is Meng Huo. He is my favorite because he is the kind of person I would like to be – patient and powerful. Meng Huo’s costume was designed to relay his role in the show.

He has a very sharp sense of morality, so his costumes emphasize that with a lot of red and white mixed together, since those are the colors for justice, law, and order. To highlight his kindhearted personality, I used blue and green mixed in the costumes because they mean kindness in Chinese culture. The black portions are all about his dark past and overcoming it through his power.

How do you come up with the ideas for your stories and characters?

I can’t come up with all the ideas. One of my awesome writer friends, James Marsters, often has to sort through all the concepts and decide which ones to go with. I will write all the scenes because we have so much fun doing it together and he is a big fan of shōjo manga (shōjo for girls).

Sometimes he may get away from the original plot and make it funnier or more romantic than I intended, which is fine. Then we can just talk about what we’ve done until he comes back around to the original idea!

Where do you get your inspiration for your settings and scenes in the books?

Are you talking about the setting of the scenes? Because they are different. I love Japanese culture, so I often draw from that. But in this case, I used Chinese architecture to make the settings more interesting.

Also, in Chinese mythology, there is a lot of interesting stuff about ghosts and demons, so we go with those ideas as well. Shi Nai’An wrote The Water Margin around 700 years ago and there have been many novelists that have worked on it since then – there are over 200 versions of it!

Why did you choose to write a young adult mystery series instead of another genre?

I have been writing YA fantasy for quite some time now and enjoy telling stories about heroes that don’t quite fit into the traditional setup of what a hero looks like. I like to throw in a little romance mixed with a touch of danger, all with the same kind of focus on character development, relationships, and action.
