What inspired you to write the Yellowstone series?

The series is inspired by the film version of the same name. The story was created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, and it was signed by the production company Fox 21 Television Studios.

How long were you working on it?

Sheridan has been working on this project since 2007 when he heard about a real-life meeting between representatives of the United States Park Service, who were discussing how to handle an increase in poaching in Yellowstone National Park.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors out there who are looking to write?

Sheridan says that it is very important to be patient and to always be willing to go above and beyond what is required of you. He says that if he hadn’t been so committed to this project, the series might still be sitting on a shelf somewhere.

What did you do to promote the series?

The show has not run for a long time, but Fox has already renewed it for a 5th season. The first season premiered on 20th March 2019, and the next season will air in early 2021.  This is quite an extensive timeline for promoting a TV show, especially when compared with others of its genre.

How do you come up with your characters – do they come to you fully-formed?

Sheridan says that, while some details and fragments of characters come to him all at once, most of his characters are developed over time. He had no idea what was going to happen in the series until all the characters had been created and began interacting with one another.

Sheridan says that he has always been interested in hearing the stories of other people, so he has already built up a wealth of knowledge about people and the way they act. He also likes to base his work on real-life events so that it feels more authentic to the audience.

How many books would you need to write to make the series into a film?

He says that, even though the series is only about 150 hours in length, he would need approximately 14 years to write it. He could conceivably work on his other work at the same time – and probably will have to do so – but getting all of his research in order before he began writing might take even longer. He simply does not know how long it will take him to complete the project until he starts writing it.
