What inspired you to write the All of Us Are Dead series?

The series is inspired by a really popular Japanese manga by the same title. The original manga is quite popular and there were talks of making it into a film but none came to fruition. I thought how interesting it would be to make this story into a Korean drama and so I decided to write the script.

Why did you decide on casting Lee Jae-kyoo as Park Ji-hu?

What made me choose Lee Jae-kyoo was that he acted in an extremely good manner filming “The Heirs”. His acting was natural and he also have a mysterious side that I wanted for this role.

What is your favourite scene in All of Us Are Dead?

My favorite scene of the series is when Park Ji-hu and Lee Jae-you are at the train station and talk about their past and how they met. Their scenes are so natural and full of emotions, it’s very easy to see why these two have feelings for each other. The appeal of this drama is that it has a mystery plotline with guys meeting up, falling in love in secret, then getting caught up in a dangerous situation where each gets hurt or worse and later begins to see the need for each other.

How do you create such unique and memorable characters?

I always try to create characters with a lot of depth and emotion, so I try to feel everything that’s happening through the main characters. I like my characters to feel lonely and then have them break out of it. My favourite genre is romance so it’s very enjoyable for me to write about relationships between young people from their perspective, I find that writing about young people really interesting as they are increasingly becoming more mature in their daily lives. This is a kind of modern-day Romeo and Juliet type love story. It’s a mixture of romance, mystery and thrill!

Why did you choose to write a post-apocalyptic story in the first place?

A really popular genre I decided to write is post-apocalyptic stories as they are getting more popular in TV dramas these days. I wanted to create a drama where things seemed to have fallen apart and the characters only had each other. This drama looks into the lives of young people who lived in secret among a group of survivors after a deadly train crash that left everyone dead except for those held captive by a mysterious group of people who seem to have it all under control.

What are your favourite books in the series so far, and why?

So far I like “The Giver” the best and my favourite character is Jonas. I also like “Hunger Games.” My favourite characters are Katniss, Peeta and Gale. There are a lot of things I like about these two books, not only do they have action and adventure but they are also stories where the MC has to meet many different people. It helped me get a better understanding of what makes up the main character and so I was able to write the characters better in All of Us Are Dead.
