Netflix’s new show Anatomy of a Scandal tackles difficult conversations head-on. The show follows a high-profile court case in which the wife of a powerful politician is accused of sexual assault. While the husband vehemently defends his wife, the victim insists that she is telling the truth. This show forces viewers to confront difficult questions about rape culture and how we respond to allegations of sexual assault. The characters are complex and the show is well-acted, but the real reason this show is worth watching is because of how it portrays the reality of sexual assault cases.

The show does not try to tell the audience who to believe or what the outcome should be. It just presents all sides in a way that allows viewers to draw their own conclusions. It helps us understand how people can have such conflicting emotions after such an event happens. The plot touches on many difficult issues that we as a society have been grappling with for years. This includes victim blaming, smearing victims’ reputations in court and using women as political pawns.

What inspired the director to write the Anatomy of a Scandal series?

The series is inspired by the acclaimed Sarah Vaughan novel of the same name. The book has already been adapted into an award winning miniseries starring Joanne Whalley and James Purefoy. The series was a huge hit so the show has been adapted for Netflix.

Is the title of Anatomy of a Scandal from F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel?

No, it is not even remotely inspired by any other literary works. Instead, it refers to the actual anatomy lesson that Kate Woodcroft’s character gives in the pilot episode of the series. We never knew that there was much more inside our bodies than we could have ever imagined! The title seems very similar to a famous novel by F Scott Fitzgerald called “The Great Gatsby”, which is about creating a good image for yourself with your money and social status.

How do directors come up with your characters and their storylines?

It is a challenge to create two equally compelling storylines and equally compelling characters (which was the case in Anatomy of a Scandal). The show has two main characters and one of them is based on the protagonist of Sarah Vaughan’s book, Kate Woodraft.  However, the new character, who is played by Michelle Dockery, was created for this Netflix adaptation. Another original character was created for James Whitehouse (played by Ruper Friend). This made it even harder to make all three characters feel real, but they were successful in doing so.

Do you have any personal connections to the scandals that inspired your books?

In the case of The Anatomy of a Scandal, I wanted to create a show that would tackle difficult conversations about sexual assault and the relationship between victim blaming and the media. I felt compelled to write this show because there are so few original works on these topics. I was an editor at British Vogue for 10 years, so I am familiar with many of these issues but also have extensive contact with people in the entertainment industry.
