Many have speculated that the title was to be “Avatar 2: The Desert War” or “Avatar: The Desert Past”. Nothing would ever be official until James Cameron himself revealed the title.

What inspired the director to write Avatar The Way of Water Series?
The series is inspired by James Cameron. In his documentary, “Ghosts of the Amazon”, James Cameron discovered a region in Peru and Bolivia that was largely untouched by development. He later returned with a small film crew to study how the people had survived through decades of ecological devastation and exploitation.
James Cameron visited Tambopata Research Center, where he filmed a documentary about the rainforest and its indigenous people. In the process, he met Tambopata’s director, Peter Laumann, who later came to play a supporting role in Avatar.
