The show’s humorous portrayal draws you into its plotline which culminates in Batman losing faith in his heroic alter ego. The show’s initial introduction is aptly titled “A Bat In The Dark,” which shows Batman living in a cave devoting his every waking moment to crime fighting. What inspired the director to write the Batwheels series?

The series is inspired by Hawke’s study of bats and their social structure. He says that “When I saw them flying with the army guys, they all followed these [ancient] codes and they have a hierarchy. Some were doing things wrong, but no one interfered or told them what to do. They just got reamed out by bat-God.” To him, the fact that bats are so organized at such a small scale made him wonder how they would be organized at a larger scale.

Who are the director’s favorite characters and why?

Hawke’s favorite characters are “Bam” and “Red”. He says that both of them are the most fun to animate. The directors have a great time animating Bam because of how easy he is to animate, while he has a lot of fun animating Red. Hawke said that “Red is sort of a tongue-in-cheek take on Batman, who’s just this guy in a mask trying to figure out where he fits in the world.”

What was it like working with Ethan Hawke?

Hawke’s acting style made it easy for the directors to direct his character as they wanted him to be animated as a bat and not Batman. The directors used Hawke’s directness to their advantage when animating Bats. While directing Red, the directors would show Hawke clips of him doing the character and then show him how Red was supposed to look and act so that Hawke could emulate it in his character. The directors would incorporate Hawke’s improvisational style into the animation as well.
