“Avatar: The Way of Water”, also known as Avatar 2, is playing on the largest screens available, and movie theatres all around the world are seeing the brilliance of a cult. It took 13 years for the James Cameron-directed film to return because it is the second installment of the franchise that was the highest-grossing movie of all time in 2009. But before we can all fully appreciate how gorgeous Part 2 is, did you know that Cameron is already working on a third and Fourth? Insider sources disclosed to the host of The Interview and Jon podcast that James Cameron is said to have given 20th Century Studios a nine-hour edit of “Avatar 3”. According to rumors, before trimming the movie to around three hours, Cameron intends to complete the VFX work for the full nine hours.

Why Does“Avatar 3” Last Nine Hours?

If The Way of Water turns out to be a box office dud, Cameron fully expects “Avatar 3” to be the final instalment in his saga. “Avatar 3” will have to be the movie that closes up the entire plot if The Way of Waterfalls is short of the studio’s expectations. Since Cameron needed the kids in “Avatar 2” to be the same age throughout the movie, he has already filmed the majority of the footage for “Avatar 4”. The director decided to continue principal photography for projects that haven’t been officially greenlit in order to retain consistency rather than digitally age them to be the same age.

The plot of the Movie

It begins with a group of Na’vi trying to save the indigenous forest from the mining machines, but failing. Jake Sully, who has been paralyzed since going to Pandora in 2077, is taken to this forest and implanted into his avatar body by Dr. Norm Spellman, who later entrusts her with Jake’s care and teaches him how to use his body again.

The Na’vi leader T’chala is ordered to shut down the mining machines for 100 years by the chief of their clan, Lo’ak. Lo’ak tells T’chala he will be responsible for making sure her people don’t resume their activities on Pandora until then. The Na’vi leader is unhappy with the decision and leaves with a small group led by T’chala’s son Neytiri. Meanwhile, Jake in his avatar body meets the human colony along with her brother Ragan and falls in love with her, however, she soon finds out he is not human but a Na’vi Avatar. She then leads him on a quest to find his people to stop them from destroying Pandora’s ecosystem. Jake uses his avatar body to fight the Na’vi who was sent to kill him and learns through Ragan that he is the son of his mother and Lo’ak.

Star Cast of the Movie

  • Sam Worthington as Jake Sully,
  • Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch,
  • Sigourney Weaver as Kiri,
  • Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri
  • Brendan Cowell as Captain Mick Scoresby,
  • Edie Falco as General Frances Ardmore

Release date of the movie

Avatar’s second film “The way of Water” was released on December 16, 2022. It’s the second sequel in the series and takes place 20 years after the events of The Way of Water. Jake Sully is still in his avatar and has a new race of children with Neytiri. The third installment will be released on December  20, 2024.

In the Conclusion

It seems unlikely that the studio would place a billion-dollar brand on a streaming service that has already put Disney in a dire financial situation. In about two weeks, the fate of “Avatar 3” will be revealed. We won’t be seeing a nine-hour picture from Cameron, that much is certain. However, a four-hour movie with a pleasant 10-minute intermission break before the third act wouldn’t bother me.
