What inspired you to start the Drive My Car series?

This series is inspired from a book called Alice in Wonderland, from the episode in which the White Queen tells what happened to her father. I thought that this is very similar with my situation. This story is about a girl who lost her parents when she was a baby and she grew up without parents. She also didn’t know anything about her father until she met him again when she became fourteen years old.

How did you come up with your characters?

They came out of my imagination and it’s been inspired by some people around me. They are not based on any specific character though they are inspired from actual people but they have their own thoughts and feelings, so it’s quite difficult to describe them exactly.

Who are your three most important creative influences?

I am not really influenced by any specific writers or performers. I think it’s just because my book “Alice in Wonderland” inspired me to go on writing the story of the Drive My Car series and so I came up with this story based on the book I read.

How did you find the right actors to play your characters?

The actors depend on what they could fit or suit better than other actors in the scene. My first meeting with Yûsuke was quite different from our first meeting until we found that we had similar thoughts, so we started talking more and more and finally ended up working together on this film..

Why did you choose to feature a different car in each episode?

Actually I just saw a video clip of the car, called an autogyro, which is an aircraft that has wheels instead of wings. I thought it was very cool so we decided to use the car for our film.

I think that we just used it to show the different world in each episode and also to show that they are in a different place every time and also to tell other stories. There are lots of reasons behind every story in this series but I believe the general inspiration is all coming from “Alice in Wonderland”, which tells me something incredible.

What kind of dangers come with your job, and how do you avoid them?

The main danger I have is that I am always afraid to get hurt and all I can do is try my best not to hurt myself or let anyone else hurt me. It’s not that hard actually because most of the time there is no one in front of me so it isn’t dangerous for me at all but sometimes when some things don’t go as expected we just have to face it calmly without getting nervous about things.
