Edge Of Tomorrow: Tom Cruise Swore At Sobbing Emily Blunt

Edge of Tomorrow (also known as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow) is an American science-fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt with Bill Paxton in approving roles. Directed by Doug Liman with a script written by Christopher McQuarrie and the writing team of Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, its story is taken from the 2004 Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The film is based on a section of the novel that was originally titled The Day After Tomorrow. (In an interview, Sakurazaka stated: “I tried to come up with the most basic story – the one that could be told in five minutes. If a movie is based on it, then so be it.”)

The film takes place during the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 during World War II, specifically from the perspective of a soldier named Bill Cage, who keeps reliving the same day over and over again, dying each time he wakes up. One day he manages to do something about it and become a hero. The last day he relives becomes his only chance for survival.

What inspired the director to write Edge Of Tomorrow?

The film is inspired by the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Director Doug Liman wanted to make the film with Tom Cruise in the lead role. The whole idea of Edge Of Tomorrow was to give the audience a fun and thrilling experience. The director wanted the movie to be sort of a sci-fi action war movie that is absolutely realistic and grounded in escapism. “That’s why I wanted to make it big with big effects, but also make it very grounded in reality, my own reality, because that’s what Tom Cruise and I were going for.

Who are the directors favorite characters and why?

The favorite character of Doug Liman is Major Bill Cage. He considers the character “funny and heroic”.  The favorite character of Emily Blunt is Rita Vrataski. The director says that the movie’s production is a very difficult process. It is because there are a lot of raw visual effects and action scenes involved in it. Fans should not have to wait for long for the sequel to arrive on the silver screen. Doug Liman recently told the media, “There’s already an idea for the sequel, and most of it is about how we do it at a bigger scale with more spectacle. They’re fun movies to make, big movies like this with visual effects.

What was the director doing during the years he worked on Edge Of Tomorrow?

The director had his hands full during this period, as he was working as a director for several other films such as Fair Game, American Made, Knight and Day, Mr Turner, The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. He also had roles in cinemas like Valkyrie (2011 film) with Tom Cruise in the lead role.

What is the storyline of the Edge Of Tomorrow?

The storyline is really simple. The storyline is based on the future warfare and is all about the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. The movie has a time loop concept in it and is set on the day when a human race was under the threat of an extraterrestrial race called Mimics.

Does Edge Of Tomorrow have any connection to Final Fantasy (FF)?

There are no connections between Edge Of Tomorrow and Final Fantasy (FF). But it must be mentioned here that Edge Of Tomorrow (the movie) was inspired by the light novel “All You Need Is Kill” by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
