They fought on a bridge that caused it to break, causing them both to fall into the river below It turns out that the Congregation had been tracking Matthew so they could find Diana since she was so important to their cause. Our heroine gets pushed into a grave situation with no one but herself to rely on.

Diana returns to Matthew, but their relationship is strained. Diana’s grandmother keeps trying to get her to rejoin the Congregation, but she’s having none of it. Then Matthew informs her that if he had known how powerful Diana was earlier he would have tried to take over the Congregation through her – basically, if they were together he could’ve taken over witchcraft itself. No pressure there!
Diana thinks back on when a witch warned her of the consequences of becoming powerful by herself. This made Diana realize that she had no choice but to kill the Congregation or they would kill her. She tells Matthew this and they go into action.
