Gladiator is an epic historical film directed by Ridley Scots and written by David Franzoni, J. Logan, & William Nicholson. The movie is the sequel to the film Gladiator and stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, who is defending Rome against an invading army of barbarians. The film also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, and Richard Harris. Filming started in February at Castle Hill in Sydney, Australia: Russell Crowe shot scenes for Gladiator 2 on location near the Blue Mountains at Castle Hill in Sydney. Filming also took place at Palm Valley Roadhouse (this was the scene where Maximus meets his mother). Filming took place on location at the Queensland University of Technology’s Marsden Campus (the site of a building used as an ancient Roman religious temple). The main set where Maximus’ house is situated was built in a park near Coorparoo.

In 180 AD, Hispano-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius intended to return from home after he led the Roman army to victory against Germanic tribes near Vindobona on the Limes Germanicus. Meridius is killed in battle after he refused to retreat from an attack by Germanic tribes. What inspired the director to write Gladiator 2?
The film is inspired by the historical reality that Rome fell to the Germanic tribes. The whole project is fiction. The story, however, takes place in Rome and Maximus becomes king and has to defend his kingdom from the Germanic tribes. The director’s inspiration for the movie came from a film of books about the fall of Rome that he is writing.

The favorite character of the director is Maximus, because of his sacrifice. Maximus is willing to make any sacrifice for the good of his country. My second favorite character is Vipus Maximus, because of his character. The character of Vipus Maximus is comic relief, first because he is a slave, but second because he derives the highest pleasure from the pain of others.
What are some of the stars’ favorite scenes to film?
There are many special scenes on the set. One scene was when Russell Crowe was climbing up a large hill. He had to climb about 20 or 30 stairs and then perform a film of stunts in a short sequence with his horse, which needed to be slow-motioned into the frame so that it could run at full speed and then hit him in the rear end with its hoof.

The storyline is about Maximus, who was the general of Rome in the past. This movie starts with his return to Rome after he was gone for 12 years. While he is on the way to meet his family, Germanic tribes invaded and captured Rome. Maximus is now a fugitive and is attacked by Germanic tribes all over the road. In one scene, he was chased by Germanic tribes while riding through a narrow passage through steep terrain on horseback.

The themes are revenge, honor, and trust. The Germanic tribes wanted to avenge their defeat in the previous films. Maximus has lost everything that he has in his life because he did not trust anyone in his life.
