She is an intelligent and shy girl who is growing up during her pre-teens and it is a vital time for the development of self-identity. Margaret struggles with understanding God, puberty, family issues, and friendships. Margaret Simon lives with her parents in New York City. Her mother is a religious fanatic against all sin, not just premarital sex.

Her father Herb Simon was an architect in his childhood, but today owns a toy shop that has hand-made wooden toys. Margaret’s brother Herb Simon Jr. often exaggerates what he does, creating suspense for his sister and wife Barbara Simon’s amusement to be worried about him.

How is the movie different from the novel?

The story of Margaret Simon is the same but there are some big differences. As we see in the trailer, in the original book, Margaret meets Nancy Wheeler at school, but in the movie, they meet while playing softball. Also, in the novel, they play a friendly game at school and her father comes to watch it. In the movie, however, her brother plays in a league at a park and Herb is also on a team where he has more screen time than the other characters.
