The first image from “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” has been released. The brand-new series, which Annabel Oakes created, transports viewers to Rydell High School’s corridors in 1954. In 1978, Grease, a musical originally, was transformed into a motion picture starring John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John. “Grease” depicts Danny, the greaser bad boy played by John Travolta, and Sandy, the girl next door played by Olivia Newton-John, as they fight together to overcome harsh criticism from their peers and defy high school stereotypes. Grease the movie was a huge hit, but “Grease 2” had a hard time matching its predecessor’s success. A new prequel series, however, is planned to bring the property back.

Background of the series

Given the box office financial and critical failure of “Grease 2”, Grease has yet to achieve a return on the level of Rise of the Pink Ladies, so it will be intriguing to watch how it performs. Grease is still one of the most defining and famous films of all time, even making a comeback in theatres earlier this year to commemorate the passing of musical great and star Newton-John despite the inadequacies of its sequel. Despite being only an adaptation of the original, Vanessa Hudgens, Aaron Tveit, and Julianne Hough’s performance of the musical in 2016’s “Grease Live!” was a critical and commercial triumph. Aside from this, the series has not seen a remake or resurrection in about 7 years. While it’s always risky to bring back a cherished series, “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” might convert an entirely new generation of Grease fans.

What is the movie “Grease” about?

The 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey served as the inspiration for the 1978 American musical romantic comedy picture Grease. The narrative of Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson and greaser Danny Zuko, who fall in love throughout the summer, is told in the film, which was written by Bronte Woodard and directed by Randal Kleiser in his theatrical feature film debut. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John appear in the film as Danny and Sandy. When it was first released on June 16, 1978, Grease was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and it quickly rose to the top of the box office. A nomination for an Oscar for “Hopelessly Devoted to You” at the 51st Academy Awards came from the soundtrack CD of the movie, which ended in 1978 as the second-best-selling album in the United States, only behind Saturday Night Fevers. The movie was chosen by the Library of Congress in 2020 for inclusion in the United States National Film Registry because it was “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important.”
