Kusuo Saiki is a manga series about a psychic high school student who cannot feel pain and has the ability to see ghosts. It was first published as a one-shot in 2012, but it later became serialized monthly on Shonen Jump Plus from 2015 onwards. Season 3 of the anime adaptation aired in Japan between January and April 2018, with its final episode airing on April 6th.

A fourth season has been announced for release in 2019 by JUMP Festa 2019, along with an OVA episode being released on December 13th, 2018, titled “Saiki Kusuo no Saii,” which will be bundled with volume 66 of the manga.

About Kusuo Saiki:

Saiki Kusuo is a powerful psychic with telekinetic abilities. He has the ability to see ghosts, but he hates ghosts and does not want to be near them or get involved in anything related to them. Saiki’s classmates think that he may have multiple personalities because of his frequent mood swings, where one moment he would act like your typical carefree high school student, and the next moment he would be as serious as a grown-up.

Release date:

The release date for the fourth season 4 of Kusuo Saiki has not been released yet, but it is expected to be on screens in 2022.

The first season of this series had a budget of ¥150 million, which is approximately $1264330.24 US dollars.

Awards:

The first season has been nominated for several awards, including the Animation Kobe Awards, Seiyu Awards, and Tokyo Anime Award Festival. It won two of these awards, which were Best Female Supporting Character (for Shion Tsuchiya as Teruhashi Kokomi) and Best Music (for Atsushi Tamura as Kusuo Saiki).

The Plot:

The plot focuses on Kusuo Saiki, a high school boy genius with psychic abilities. He constantly gains attention from everyone appearing around him because of his powers but wants to live a normal life without it being noticed by anyone else. A high school student who possesses many supernatural abilities and is also capable of telepathy which he uses in everyday life to get through his school.

Under normal circumstances, Saiki Kusuo can easily fix this problem by using his powers to remove those memories of himself from other people’s minds. However, if there are too many witnesses present at once or something interrupts him while casting off his powers, he will not be able to control it.

The Starring Cast:

  • Saiki Kusuo is portrayed by Fukuyama Jun, one of the most popular young actors in Japan who has appeared in three live-action adaptations of Gantz and Hyouka as Satoshi Fukube.
  • His other notable roles include Hideyoshi Toyotomi from Sengoku Basara and Hajime Kindaichi in the live-action adaptation of Tantei Gakuen Q.
  • Ryan Thiessen in the English dub while Kineshi Hairo, Riki Nendo, Shun Aonuma are voiced by Tomoaki Maeno, Natsuki Hanae, and Shinnosuke Tachiban,a respectively.

Ratings:

Both seasons of Saiki Kusuo were well received by both fans and critics. The first season had a score of around four out of five stars, based on reviews from professionals such as MyAnimeList or IMDb. For the second season, this number was slightly higher at around four and a half stars. Ratings for Saiki Kusuo’s anime were not as high as its manga counterpart, with the first season receiving a score of only five on MyAnimeList.
