The Monarch series has been a recurring part of Scottish history for hundreds of years. The Monarch series was originally penned by Frederic Stewart Rose, who published two books in the series.

The first book from 1876, titled The Adventures of a Black Bagpiper: A Tale Of Monarchy And Mutiny tells the story of an Irish musician who takes up his bagpipes to entertain Queen Victoria during her visit to Ireland and then moves on to Scotland where he becomes entangled in its politics and eventually meets Bonnie Prince Charlie for whom he plays his pipes at Culloden. The book won the Moncreiffe Medal, which was an annual award for the book written in Scots that was judged to be the best of its year. The Adventures of a Black Bagpiper was followed by another series of books called The Monarch Notes by Frederick Rose which had ten books that mostly featured monarchs like James IV and Mary Queen of Scots.
