Olga Dies Dreaming is a book about immigration and identity. It tells the story of two siblings who are from Nuyorican families, growing up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. They grew up playing their parts: Rodríguez’s Prieto (the Olga) was Olga’s older brother and his father figure. He grew up playing the part of being cheerful and overachieving to mask some other feelings he had inside him, such as loneliness and sadness due to his father leaving them when they were young. Olga died dreaming is about the Olgas trying to find themselves and figure out who they are in a world that does not care where she comes from.
In this book, Olga dies dreaming, Rodríguez’s Prieto (Olga) deals with his mother abandoning them when he was younger because of her political activism and their identity.
This book is about a Nuyorican brother (Rodríguez) and sister from Sunset Park in Brooklyn who is reckoning with their absent politically radical mother and the glittering careers among New York City’s elite after Hurricane Maria. Rodriquez’s Prieto, Olga’s older brother, is a popular congressman who wears his Puerto Rican pride like a badge of honor.
