When I first laid my eyes on The Nerdwriter’s review of Our Flag Means Death, I was quite surprised at how many positive aspects he had to say about this lesser-known animated comedy. He claimed to have never laughed harder than when he watched it and went on to list the top 5 things that make this show so terrific. My immediate thought after watching his video was “I must watch this now!”

Do you know about the release date of Our Flag Means Death:

Is Our Flag Means Death: A Terrific Pirate Comedy available for streaming? Yes, indeed it is!

The first thing that got my attention was the charming style of presentation and how the series took on a ‘cute’ sort of approach to animation. The animation itself is quite striking as I found myself being drawn into each scene.

Here is the plot of Our Flag Means Death discussed:

The story opens with the protagonist, Jojo, complaining about his boring pirate life on a small island. That is until one day he sees a particularly terrifying pirate flag wave in the distance

I found that the animation fit each scene so well, moving from one thing to another without missing a beat or losing any consistency. The animation adapted to the story perfectly and made it enjoyable for me throughout.

The main protagonist Jojo is always seen with a strange smile on his face, despite everything around him being quite distressingly depressing. Everything changes when he finds out that his pirate flag is attached to an extremely dangerous monster called Blackbeard.

The Name of Cast & Characters of Our Flag Means Death:

What is the Our Flag Means Death Series and what are its goals?

This series is a Japanese anime show about a pirate named Jojo, who also happens to be a dog. It aired 2013-14 in Japan and has since been licensed by FUNimation.

The creators have reportedly aimed to “have fun with the characters” in this 12 episode series with all of the main cast members who have appeared in other roles going through voice acting changes for their parts within the series.

The foremost thing that struck me about this show is how it can be divided into two different aspects – one being the human characters and then you have Blackbeard and his entire crew. The human characters are quite inspirational as they all have certain traits that attract attention.

How can we use this series to help create a more inclusive society?

There are many things that we can learn from this series about our flag. In an interview, the director Taiki Waititi had said, “My main thought when making Jojo was to have fun with the characters and be able to relate to them.”

These human characters have had their lives affected by a flag and their identity changed because of it. At first, they couldn’t bear the burden of living as a dog but then became more open and accepting of it with time.  This shows that we need to look beyond our differences; especially in regards to race or mental health issues. We can learn a lot from Blackbeard’s crew’s acceptance of their flag, which is something I found quite inspiring!

What challenges do the series face in terms of execution and achieving its goals?

One of the best things about this series is that it takes on a real playfulness with its characters. This means that you will be able to relate to the protagonist and this can help you take an interest in how he copes with his new life.

However, I feel like it lacks a bit of depth within each character, especially after seeing how they are only seen through their flag’s color. I enjoyed seeing the different personalities both of the main cast and Blackbeard’s crew had, however, I felt as though their flags gave them some kind of limitation that defined them as a character.

What has been the public reaction to the series so far and what do you think?

I felt like the public reaction to this series was quite polarizing. There were a lot of people who adored the series but there were a few people who found the entire idea of setting it to be “weird”. It did not appeal to everyone and some people didn’t even give it a chance, I feel that we need to take into consideration everybody’s opinions when making such opinions about anything.
