Predicting optimism prices: What is optimism (OP)?

In one word, optimism is a state of mind where people believe they will be able to cope with challenges that come their way. It’s the opposite of pessimism and when people are hopeful, it produces psychological benefits in the form of lower stress levels and more positive moods. Optimism has been linked with better physical health and even better performance at work. But because optimism is tough to measure, companies want to know how much optimism there is in a particular market before taking a gamble on investing there. That’s where this study comes in handy.

Scientists already have a pretty good understanding of what drives optimism, so it’s not as if this is uncharted territory. Optimism is reliant on both external and internal stimuli. People who are optimistic don’t necessarily have more money or a series of satisfying life experiences under their belt. What they do have is an attitude that looks for hope where others might see trouble. They have an active belief that good things will happen to them, whether by chance or by their own skill. Optimistic people get excited about new challenges. They feel as if they can handle anything life throws at them because they know there will be someone who has gone through it before, and that they can learn from their experience.

What is Optimism (OP)?

Optimism, also known as an optimistic personality style, is another important Humanistic value that describes a constellation of attitudes and behaviors. Optimistic individuals believe that their world is bright and full of possibilities. They tend to be cheerful, optimistic, curious and relatively unconcerned with problems and difficulties in life. Optimistic people are able to see both the positives and the negatives in any situation, which gives them greater control over their lives.

The focus on self-control suggests that optimism may be related to personality rather than circumstance. Research also supports this interpretation: individuals high in optimism have more self-control compared to lower optimistic individuals. Control is a major factor influencing optimistic self-statements. Optimists are able to learn from the past, but then leave it behind. They don’t dwell on it. Once they decide that something is over, they move forward with life. They accept change and try to channel that into growth rather than wallowing in what they lost.

The Optimism price history

The Optimism price is a measure of how optimistic an individual/group of individuals is. It is calculated by looking at the difference between the negative event probability and positive event probability (NEP & PEP). We use a logit regression to calculate a point estimate of optimism for each specific time period. The results are aggregated into the price and we then use this as one input in our pricing algorithms. These algorithms estimate the current status of user sentiment towards an asset and predict future prices.

The Optimism price prediction

The price of optimism is no longer rising (this time last year it was $25 and it’s now at $41). This can be attributed to people realising that their world has its problems but that optimism can be a tool for getting through them. In terms of the future, things look good. There are two major trends we’re keeping an eye on toward the later half of this year. The first is the continued proliferation of AI and the corresponding boom in job losses, especially in sectors such as truck driving. These jobs are being lost to better, more efficient machines which doesn’t bode well for people who rely on big trucks for a living.

The second is the growing popularity of Virtual Reality. VR is an immersive and visual experience that allows people to sit back and escape from their world. They can move through a land of pure imagination, or visit places they probably never will in real life. As the technology improves and becomes more accessible, we’ll see people making more use of it. This means that daily life problems will seem further away, if only for a few hours on the weekend.
