A recent interview with Pride and Prejudice actor, Matthew Macfadyen, has stirred up some controversy regarding a certain hand flex seen in the movie. In the interview, Macfadyen says that the hand flex was not scripted and that he made it up on the spot. However, some fans of Pride and Prejudice don’t believe him. What’s the truth? Was the hand flex scripted or not?

“Yes, there was a hand flex that I never mentioned before and I’ve never seen it. It’s not physically possible to do what you see in the film. If someone asked me to do that, I’d be too embarrassed to even try.” Interview with Matthew Macfadyen

Do you know about the release date of Pride & Prejudice:

This series will be released in the Second Half of 2022. Also, the series has a production company British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which is the sole owner of the series. This series is predicted to be as popular as “Pride and Prejudice” with a third instalment coming. Jane Austen’s novel tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a fiercely independent young woman in 19th century England. When her sister returns from an advantageous marriage to the poor Mr Collins, a man originally chosen for Lizzy, she finds herself immersed in a world of love and money despite her initial misgivings about marrying for anything but love.

Here is the plot of Pride & Prejudice discussed:

Lizzy’s father has recently died, and she and her mother are left with only a small plot of land to subsist on, which is owned by Mr Collins, the pompous clergyman who will eventually propose to Lizzy’s older sister, Jane. Unfortunately for Jane, she realizes that his proposal is based more on social standing than love, and she turns him down.

Lizzy then finds herself in a precarious position: Mr Bingley has arrived at her house in order to pursue Jane, but he falls in love with Lizzy instead! Meanwhile, the conniving Mr Wickham grows increasingly attracted to Lizzy, and he tells her a pack of lies about Darcy (the new heir of the rich Mr Darcy, who lives next door). When Lizzy hears that Mr Darcy is arrogant and mean, she immediately assumes that Mr Wickham is correct about Darcy’s true character.

How does Austen use language to create a unique tone?

Austen uses language in the novel, to create an atmosphere of delight and sometimes embarrassment. “She used language in her novels to create an atmosphere of delight, but also to highlight the embarrassment, both real and perceived, of characters. “Essay on “Austen’s Pride and Prejudice” by Pam Collins. Thesis: “Jane Austen’s novels are dialogue-intensive. Dialogue is more important than a plot to Austen’s work because she considers plot to be a vehicle for revealing character.”

How does Austen set up surprises for her readers?

The main theme in this novel is expectations vs reality; much like life. One would expect a rich young man with good manners (i.e. Mr Collins) to be humble and gentleman-like, but Mr Collins actually turns out to be a pompous, snobbish, rude and quite mean man. Also, Mr Darcy is not as bad as many people think he is he’s just misunderstood by Lizzy, which is where the novel gets its name “Pride and Prejudice”. Lizzy has grown up around him so she does not expect him to be the way he turned out to be but in some ways it was disappointing.

How does Austen use the plot to dramatise issues such as social class?

Social class plays a big part in the novel because most characters are either rich and well-mannered or poor and less educated. Mrs Bennett for example often says things like “A daughter with ten thousand pounds is much better than a daughter without it. Her words say a lot about how she sees the world and how she treats her children. Lizzy shows that she is very intelligent, independent and sociable throughout the novel. She also is not afraid to stand up for herself even when it comes to Mr Darcy.

What is Austen’s view of marriage? What are the difficulties of marrying for love?

In this novel, Austen explores the problems of marrying for love rather than for money. It’s almost impossible to marry for love because people usually marry to fit in with their family or because they don’t know what else to do. This novel shows that it is hard to marry for love because there are many people trying to convince you to marry for money and you are left not sure which way to go. This novel also shows that marriages can be successful because if people marry for love then they would be happy with the person they marry, regardless of the other person’s social status.
