What inspired you to write Pieces of Her Series and what is the story behind it all?

This series is inspired by a real-life case study of a young woman who was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and her journey to find the person behind her alters. I developed the story from this case study.

If you do a quick search of DID and the triggers that cause it, you’ll find some wildly interesting case histories. Many of them are just like my story and many more are just as strange and fascinating. I’m drawing on all of these things for this series.

Why did you choose to make the protagonist a woman?

This is a woman’s story. The experiences are different depending on the gender of the person who endures them. It was always intended to be told from a female perspective.

Everyday life is a challenge for me, haha! I know that doesn’t really answer your question, but it does make me feel better about not being able to do laundry or cook dinner.

Some of my toughest times have been when I’ve lost focus on my own goals and ideals in favor of pleasing others or trying to fit in with their expectations of what I should be doing or what success looks like for me.

What does your writing process look like and where do you find inspiration?

When I’m writing, I have this idea in my head that I can’t shake. Sometimes, it’s detailed and fully formed; other times there are just snippets of it floating through my head. It’s like a dream when it’s not a dream!

Sometimes, the ideas come to me while I’m doing other things—like reading or watching TV. Other times, they come to me in the middle of the night; and on rare occasions, they arrive via that weird hive-mind-type communication that only happens in my own brain.

Are there any other projects that you’re working on at the moment?

I have a book in the works that I’m writing with my sister, Michelle Collette. It’s called “Under the Umbrella Tree.” We’re not quite finished with that one yet but it’s coming! When I’m writing, I always want to make sure I have enough to go on for each scene or chapter. If I don’t know where something is going or how it fits into the bigger picture, it’s hard for me to write and keep moving forward.

Which actors and actresses are you eyeing for your next Netflix series?

I’m so glad you asked! I’ve seen so many amazing performances in the past year or so, it’s hard to pick just a handful. Obviously, I’ll probably go with the amazing Toni Collette. She is such a powerhouse on screen, but she is also just a sweetheart in real life. Her performance in “The Front Runner” was such an inspiration to me as well. There’s no one quite like her and that makes her work even better when you see her perform it.
