The plot of the Sanditon Series revolves around an unfinished Jane Austen novel of the same name. It’s a story about Charlotte Heywood, who has recently been jilted at the altar and is looking for love and purpose in the world. She soon finds herself tangled in the courtship of her brother Sidney and his friend Edward Denham, who are both competing for her attention and affection.

What inspired the director to write the Sanditon series of books?

The series is inspired by the original Sanditon novel by Jane Austen. The story behind the series was that 10 years ago, we had the opportunity to adapt Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon for a new audience.

It was an amazing opportunity, but it would have been impossible without the support of Jane Austen’s family and the wonderful Jane Austen Society of North America. Since then our team has been working to make a compelling story that honors the legacy of this original work while creating a new vision for how it might appear in today’s world.

What has been your favorite part of filming Sanditon?

Our favorite part of filming Sanditon is working with our cast & crew, who are all wonderful people and tell a very fun story. It’s not often that you get to work on a small three-camera set with such an amazing cast (and director!) in what feels like a glorified theater production every day, so we definitely feel very lucky to be involved in this project.

Who is the favorite character in the series and why?

The favorite character for both Poppy & Jon is Sidney Parker. It’s so hard to say why because both of us love him so much. Poppy explained that it’s very easy to love Sidney Parker, but also find him frustrating at times.

She said, “Sidney is Mr. Darcy mixed with a bit of Bertie Wooster, which makes for a wonderfully enjoyable character that is great fun to play! Sanditon was created by Jane Austen 200 years ago. But if Jane Austen had lived now and was a fan of the series she would definitely be watching it every week! (Jane Austen Series’ interview with Jane Austen Society)

Are there any specific themes or messages that the director is hoping to communicate?

The themes of Sanditon are similar to those in other Austen works, but as it’s a modern adaptation we’re hoping that Jane Austen fans will continue to be inspired by the themes of love and friendship that she writes about so beautifully. The message in Sanditon is that when you are faced with the choice to choose your love, whether it’s for your family or your friends, you should never give up hope.
