What is Severance Series about and what inspired you to write it?

The series is about a group of employees who are fired from their jobs on the same day — with no warning or explanation. They band together over beers to commiserate about life outside their current circumstances and plan their next moves.

I was inspired to write the series by an email from my boss that I got fired on the same day as a group of friends who had worked with me on different projects at various companies. It struck me that no one had ever gone into detail about what would actually happen after you got fired, so I decided to write a sitcom about the resulting crisis of faith in our society.

What are some of the themes in the book, and how did you go about exploring them?

Themes include getting fired and out of work, finding a new job, negotiating for salary, and feeling inadequate fears we all have. In season 1, there are four main characters dealing with problems in their personal lives that arise from their unemployment.

In season 2, the show continues to explore themes such as people’s failure to communicate with each other (even when they love each other), the fact that we are often our own worst enemy, and how easily people can make promises they can’t keep.

How does the book compare or contrast with your previous work?

We’ve been writing comedy for a long time and have written on both sides of the political spectrum, so I think our political views will be apparent in the show. The book was certainly our most personal project to date, as I’d always wanted to write a character study and ended up using real people.

The structure of the series is different from our sitcoms as it is a single-camera show (with no laugh track) and is more focused on the story, which we found forced us to get better at writing dialogue.

Are there any personal connections that you drew upon while writing?

I wrote the book while I was unemployed, so it’s definitely my most direct experience of being out of work. When we were writing Season 2, we had people come in and act out scenes from their own lives on the show. We hope to continue doing this in future seasons; it’s a great way to see how others have dealt with similar situations.

What are some of your favorite quotes from the book?

In Season 1, our main character comes up with a plan for finding new jobs quickly by having everyone find fake résumés from major companies around the world, put their real names on them, and send them to all those companies simultaneously with just two or three days’ notice. It’s simple and yet hilarious, and we’re going to be using it in Season 2 at least until we find a better plan to keep the story moving.
