The Shantaram series of books is an epic work of fiction, with the story unfolding over a decade in Bombay. The series tells the tale of Lin, who runs away from his life as an Australian doctor to become a fugitive and opium dealer in India. The series is based on the novel Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, who is also known as “G.D.R.” The story about Lin was inspired by an Australian journalist who became a heroin addict in Bombay and lived as a fugitive for nearly eight years with his wife, who had taken refuge in the Netherlands until he was caught and extradited to India. The novel describes his life as an Australian fugitive from the law, who calls himself Shantaram and moves to Bombay as a fugitive from the law after having acquired opium addiction and being caught up in a brawl which nearly led to him being murdered by Peter, an intoxicated tourist. After escaping prosecution and fleeing legal pursuit, he moves to India and takes refuge in the city of Bombay.
