The Shantaram series of books is an epic work of fiction, with the story unfolding over a decade in Bombay. Shantaram is the first book by Gregory David Roberts. The novel describes his life as an Australian fugitive from the law, who calls himself Shantaram and moves to Bombay as a fugitive from the law after having acquired opium addiction and being caught up in a brawl which nearly led to him being murdered by Peter, an intoxicated tourist. After escaping prosecution and fleeing legal pursuit, he moves to India and takes refuge in the city of Bombay.
