The Skyfall series was a very successful one for James Bond and Sam Mendes, who took over the reigns of directing duties from Michael Lewis. Now, months after the final film was released in theaters, Mendes has revealed something about the project to The Independent. This is very much an old-school James Bond movie, even more so than any that have come before it. It’s nearly four hours long, and deals with themes like “family” and “betrayal,” as well as physical combat, spycraft/technology and death. All of this helps make Skyfall closer to what people may expect if they had never seen any of the other films at all.Â
The entire thing is based off an original idea that I have wanted to see in a Bond film. Sure, there are elements of Quantum Solace and Casino Royale in here, but Quantum didn’t work for me. Casino doesn’t work anymore now that we’ve seen it twice….and I had to eradicate much of Casino Royale anyway because of the co-opting of the story by other films and television shows.
