The history of gaming might surprise you. Traditional games like playing cards and board games have been played for millennia, a social activity favoured as much by the Ancient Egyptians as people now.

The invention of the internet and rapid advancements in digital technology mean that most games are played online rather than in person in the 21st century. However, much has been done to ensure that there’s still the same element of social interaction when playing in this form.

The social elements of online gaming

One of the major benefits of virtual games versus in-person versions is that you can play with anyone at any time. Being connected via the internet gives you access to players on a global scale, and you can play at home or on the go. It’s also easier to coordinate gaming sessions with friends as they can join without having to travel to one place.

The games themselves also encourage social interaction, particularly video games which were a social lifeline during the pandemic lockdowns for those who felt isolated. Friends could connect over the internet to compete against each other, play as a team against others, or collaborate on computer-led PVM (player-versus-monster) campaigns.

These online gaming platforms also go out of their way to create a sense of community. Video gamers can speak to one another, either on a call using a headset with a microphone or via a live messaging function. Other games come with a built-in live chatroom where everyone can interact together. These chatrooms are monitored by humans and computers to ensure user safety.

Classic games gone digital

While video games are most predominant in the gaming industry, classic games have gone digital and can be played online too. You can socialise with friends old and new while playing a selection of the traditional favourites, from games of chance to challenges that test your mind.

  • Bingo

Once a staple of local community halls, this game of luck still unites players in its online form. You can chat with your fellow gamers in group chats while benefitting from the convenience of being able to access the game via a Bingo app on your smartphone.

  • Solitaire

People have been playing Solitaire since the 18th century, but it remains one of the most popular playing card games to this day. This card-ordering game was once a solo occupation but has been transformed into a social endeavour by moving online.

  • Chess

This game of logic will challenge even the most mathematically-minded person and can provide entertainment for hours. Stretch your brain and test your capabilities against other players from all over the world ranging from amateurs to masters.
