TÁR: Falls Into the Same Old Traps

The TÁR series is a story-driven first-person shooter that takes place during the Revolution of 1848. In Hungary, it was originally released in Hungarian but it’s been translated into English. The game follows the story of a soldier and his journey through Budapest in search of his missing child, Liza. The game is built on a military theme, with more than 50 weapons and counting right up to the release date including spears, muskets, swords, and bayonets. The gameplay is multiplayer only but there is no human versus human combat as players can choose to team up or fight other human players or computer-controlled enemies by selecting from various objective modes such as “capture the flag”. The objective mode is randomly chosen for each round and also becomes the basis of a new weapon or item that can be purchased from the store. The game was built in a proprietary engine, “Delta Software,” which adapts between multiple platforms. The game was first developed on PC, then ported to the PlayStation 2 and PSP systems, followed by releases on Nintendo DS, Mac OSX, and Linux operating systems.

It was released in these languages after the Hungarian version, called TÁR FÓK – Két színdarab volt, became a success among anglophones and other Westerners. The game came out in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, PSP, Mac OS X, and Nintendo DS systems. However, the console versions have received some minor updates since their original release to bring them more up to speed with the PC releases.

The first act shows the protagonist preparing for battle against an invading Russian army.
