What inspired you to write the That Dirty Black Bag Series?

This series is inspired by my love of westerns. Scores of films and television shows have been made out of the western genre and it is such a huge part of our culture. I found myself wanting to write a different type of western story.

I’ve had the idea for 8 years, but it wasn’t until December that I had a clear vision of what was going on in the story and the overall plotline. After that, it took me roughly 18 months to come up with all the stories in HDB1 (the first one released).

What was your process for writing the series, from idea to finished product?

I started writing the script at home, by myself. The process is pretty much the same as it has been for all my movies; I write the script, I brainstorm story ideas, and then I write the script until something occurs to me that needs changing. It’s a pretty quick process for me, but it’s still a long way from completion.

After I draft out an entire page of dialogue and action, I work hard on refining everything as best as possible. It can take anywhere from two days to six months to get it looking just right. After that, I have to start working on each episode so they come out one after another in their timeline.

How does your personal life influence your writing, if at all?

I suppose it gives me ideas. I have a very active imagination so I can get inspired by the smallest things sometimes. Part of that image is seeing different worlds, different lives, and different ways of doing things.

I start with an idea or a theme that will run throughout the whole series. This can be anything from a scene, to an action sequence, or even something involving a character’s development within the episodes. Once I decide on what that is, I start brainstorming how best to approach it in each episode and how everything will connect and make sense after it’s all done.

Are there any themes or messages that you hope readers take away from the series?

The main one I hope my series teaches readers is that life is beautiful. As hard as the days can be, we still have to look for the beauty of life – no matter what we’re doing. When we find it, it makes us remember why we do things of our own free will.
