Plot Summary of “Homeroom”

Oakland as a tantalizing case study. In a city that struggles with rising crime and health care woes, its public school systems are not exactly equipped to prepare youth for the travails of young adulthood. And yet, Oakland’s homeroom teachers and administrators are tasked with providing a sense of safety for their students.

In the final chapter of Peter Nicks’ documentary trilogy on public education in America–which includes The Waiting Room (2012) and The Force (2017) this Academy Award-winning film follows an eclectic group of seniors at Oakland High School as they navigate the last year of homeroom.

Homeroom is a documentary film directed and produced by Peter Nicks in 2020, it follows Oakland’s homerooms throughout all four years of high school. The Academy Award-winning Homeroom Documentary explores public education through an intimate lens: one that peers into America’s public homerooms and classrooms through the eyes of its students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community.

In Oakland, we meet a diverse cast of characters: high-school seniors who are preparing for college exams; homeroom teacher Carlos Rojas who must adapt to new district safety policies amid declining enrollment; social justice warriors in the senior and homeroom homerooms who fight for their classmates and against gang violence. In the end, it’s a story about how education shapes us all – and what happens when we don’t take care of our public schools.

The film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 29, 2021. On April 20, 2021, Hulu acquired the film’s U.S. distribution rights and set it for an August 12, 2021 release.
