The best-selling consoles in history.

Every time a new console comes out there is obviously a lot of expectation for the improvements it can have for the gamer. Better graphics, more speed, in short. As soon as they hit the shops, people rush to buy them and start their gaming experience.

But, just as there have been successes, there have been failures, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. Many were sold, but they didn’t work as expected, and that caused more waiting for the next generation to improve.

If you want to know which are the worst fortnite skins, it’s a good idea to go to this link as there you can find out about that and more. There are lots of tips and notes on the latest games to help you become better at the game of your choice. It’s worth going and reading.

Let’s review which are the best-selling consoles in history.

5. Nintendo Wii

The beauty of this system is that it didn’t have a specific audience. Everyone could play it and there were titles for whatever you needed. With games like Wii Sports, it broadened the target audience as you could even play it with your dog.

It came out in 2006 and was the replacement for the GameCube which wasn’t the best of the Nintendo family. When it saw the failure of the Cube, the Japanese company thought the best idea was to make them different so as not to compete directly with PlayStation, which was winning the battle.

Nintendo optimised the manufacturing of the console to make it good and did not prioritise the performance of the games for profit, it was meant to bring the family together and that is why the games were 10% cheaper than any console.

By supporting motion, the Wii continues to be used by doctors as part of the rehabilitation process for patients. Nintendo created a beauty that has sold 101 million consoles so far.

4. PlayStation

When it came out it was a smash hit. Nobody expected it, because it was not just a console, but one of the first home entertainment systems. A lot of people bought it and they didn’t even like video games, but you could watch movies and play your favourite CD.

It did so well that many companies negotiated to release exclusive titles on PlayStation, because of its powerful engine and better graphics than the Nintendo 64, with which it was competing at the time. What’s more, the original idea of PlayStation was a collaboration with Nintendo to bring out a powerful 64-bit console, but they never managed to agree, and good thing, because we would have missed out on a great thing.

To date, 102 million PlayStation consoles have been sold. Sony started the revolution in the console world by refusing to collaborate with Nintendo. Didn’t they know that one?

3. Nintendo Switch

In 2017 Nintendo thought outside the box again and created a hybrid between a handheld and a home console. The Switch has the best of both worlds and they know it’s a revolutionary concept, as the company stated that they are not going to stop producing games for this console, as they know that people keep buying them.

As has become customary, exclusive games are coming out and the numbers are impressive. Mario Kart 8 has sold over 46 million copies. Nintendo’s best-selling racing game without a doubt.

The Switch has become the Japanese company’s flagship console because it keeps selling. At one point they thought they should improve it and come out with a Switch 2, but they backed off because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

They decided it was better to keep producing games and uploading software improvements. With the Switch, they don’t have much further to go. Nintendo is used to thinking quite creatively, so it’s possible that the next step will be very different from the Switch.

To date, the Switch has sold around 107 million consoles, a number that looks set to grow, because they are far from discontinuing it.

2. PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 3 wasn’t a bad concept, it had a lot of good ideas and improvements, but something was missing, and it was expensive. Sony knew they had to improve because the sales of the PS3 were not good, it had not reached the expectations of the company, especially after the PS2, which we will talk about later.

When they announced the PS4, at an improved price, it was basically everything the PS3 was not. People went absolutely crazy. The online experience was more intuitive and the user suffered less than with the PS3.

Games like Red Dead Redemption for this console have been an absolute hit. They have won international awards which the 3 couldn’t do. With this console, Sony regained absolute hegemony at the time, because they learned from their mistakes.

The PS4 has sold around 117 million units worldwide, it is a barbaric number and it is still valid, because, although the console is no longer produced, the games are still valid and some of them are still available for download online. That’s how good it is.

1.PlayStation 2

The best-selling console is this one. It was a half-unexpected success because when Sony decided to improve the PS1, in their mind was the phrase sequels are no good. There were things to improve, and they took a risk.

It took them about 10 years on the project. When they finished there were still some doubts, yes, they had removed all the problems of its predecessor and added a lot of things that they thought would please people. When they decided to release it, everything exploded.

One of the most striking things was the price. It was affordable for everyone, and it wasn’t just for gaming. It was a home entertainment system. Sony knew they had got it right, but they never expected the numbers the PS2 delivered.

157 million sales of this console set a new benchmark in entertainment systems. The PlayStation 2 set the bar high and became the standard for the consoles that followed.

There are other iconic consoles such as the Super Nintendo, which was a hit at the time, but only sold 50 million units. But nostalgia prompted Nintendo to bring out a re-release that did very well. No doubt there will be improvements in the future, but the ones mentioned in this list are beautiful for what they mean in our lives. Which of these do you have at home?
