Here is the plot of The Dropout discussed:

Theranos promised to revolutionize the way the world’s blood could be tested, but the now-defunct company’s tests were riddled with flaws and swindled millions of dollars from investors.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Theranos’ main blood testing instrument was a machine that used only tiny amounts of some of the chemicals it purportedly analyzed. Inside Theranos, Holmes had banned employees from using big words like ‘beta’ and ‘gamma,’ according to one former employee.

What was your process for writing the books, and how long did it take you to finish?

The process of writing the series was interesting because the writing came to me in a very unexpected way. I had been working on another manuscript in another genre and got stuck. Then, one night while I was putting my kids to bed, I discovered that a character from my other manuscript was off trying her own story (completely unbeknownst to me).

And so I kept hearing her voice in my head and wrote down what she said, which became the beginning chapter of book one in the series. The rest of the books just came out over time; it took about 2 and a half years to get them all down on paper and they flowed much faster than anything else I’d ever written before.

Are any of the characters based on people you know in real life?

The characters aren’t based on anyone real, but I do know people who are similar to them. My son’s friend Nate is a bit like Daniel, and my granddaughter Alla is pretty much like Tess. The series came to me through a process I call “stream of consciousness” writing.

This is when you are in the flow, and what you write is talking to you through the characters, rather than you telling them what to do. My writing tends more toward the literary side, but this series has allowed me to be more of a storyteller.

Do you have any plans to write more books in The Dropout Series?

Yes, I have plans to write more books in this series. At the moment, I’m in the process of auditioning writers for a second book, which will feature the same characters (minus Tess and Daniel, who died in “The Dropout: Season One”) but will be set about 11 years later. It will follow Tess’s children and will be titled ” The Dropout: Season Two.”

I have also been approached by a major film producer who wants to do a feature film from the first three books of this series. That will be a lot of work, but I’m hoping that it comes to fruition in the next year or so.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a former journalist, former kindergarten teacher, and mom of three very different kids. I used to write a lot of technical and how-to medical articles for magazines like the Journal of the American Medical Association, and I won two international medical writing awards for my work.

I’ve always loved books. My mom was an avid reader; she was also an extremely well-educated woman who raised me to be curious about everything, especially science and other cultures. She was born in Hungary, one of 10 siblings; her dad was from Germany.

Maybe that’s where my love of history comes from. I also love to travel and have spent lots of time at archaeological sites around the world. I’ve been fascinated by ancient history since I was a kid when I used to play in the ruins of an ancient Greek temple near my grandmother’s apartment building in New York.
