The Horror of Dolores Roach, a dark new comedy series starring Golden Globe nominee Justina Machado (Six Feet Under, One Day at a Time) and based on the award-winning play by Charlyne Yi, has been greenlit to series at Prime Video. Blumhouse Television produces the show (Get Out, The Purge) and executive produced by Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) for Harpo Films.

In The Horror of Dolores Roach, Justina Machado stars as Dolores Roach, neither a typical heroine nor your average heroine’s sister. She’s more interested in playing video games in her living room than parenting her three pre-teen children or trading beauty tips with her girlfriend, Suzie Wong. So when the building super threatens to evict Dolores for paying rent, she bluffs her way through a scheme to get his attention: she fakes a haunting to scare him off.

What inspired you to write The Horror of Dolores Roach?

My work has inspired this series with Justina Machado, who deserves her moment in the spotlight. As a writer and actress, she is so brave and intelligent. She constantly gives me the courage to talk about challenging female characters.

Halloween was based on my vision for Justina Machado as Laurie Strode. That same year I was surprised when she asked me if we could start thinking about this character for a television series. I thought it would be too risky to stick her in a remake of that iconic film, but she had such an intuitive understanding of this story that it makes me not want to mess with anything she suggests.

What was your writing process, and did it change over time?

Writing the novel pretty much followed the same process as writing a script. The main difference is, of course, that you have to make sure that you have enough “beats” (or moments) to sustain 10 episodes.

Another thing is that you find yourself needing more complicated language because, as I write on my blog, if I need a word, I’ll invent it. However, that freedom does not translate well into prose, so I had to narrow down the vocabulary for this book and make sure that every word counted.

Why do you think horror is so popular right now, and what makes your book different?

I think horror is so popular because of the current socio-political climate. People have always been afraid of both the dark and the light, but there’s a pretty big divide right now, and people are living on the edge. So I think more than ever. Horror is a genre that allows us to talk about real issues without feeling too exposed or triggering to the general public.

I hope this book is different because it focuses on female characters and tries to humanize them. I think women can be just as smart, powerful, and sexy as men, but we rarely see them presented in ways that don’t belittle or objectify them.

Are there any real-world locations or events that served as inspiration?

I based the story on my own experiences with real estate agents. I lived in a small coastal city, so I was very conscious of the violence that can happen if you don’t make a good impression on someone you don’t know very well. So that’s where the idea of fake hauntings came from.

I also based some aspects of Laurie Strode on myself because, as I mentioned earlier, she saw herself as a woman who could handle anything, just like me! I also inspired my marriage and how Laurie’s mom died (and her reaction to it), which is not a part of the book.
