The Last Kingdom is a historical thriller set in the late 9th century, during the reign of Alfred the Great. The show follows the story of Uhtred, a young man who was born into slavery but raised as a warrior by Alfred. When his homeland is invaded, Uhtred must choose between his birthright and the country that has taken him in. 

The series stars Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred, Jamie Campbell Bower as Tewdric and David Dawson as Alfred. In addition, Mark Gatiss plays Jarl Oscyld, an experienced warrior who becomes a trusted advisor to Uhtred, while Andrew Buchan stars as Godwine; a nobleman whose betrayal sets off the events of the first season.

The series is inspired by a series of novels entitled “The Saxon Stories” written by Bernard Cornwell. The series of books will be the inspiration for The Last Kingdom Series. The First half of the series will be based on the character of Uhtred, while the second half will be based on the characters of Alfred and his son Edward.

The script was written by Nick Braham who had also written the TV series, “The Last Kingdom”, which was based on a trilogy of novels by Bernard Cornwell. The series was made and produced by BBC in partnership with Carnival Films under his executive producer Carnival Films, while director of the series is Hardi Olafsson.

How did the director come up with the name of your new show?

Writer Nick Braham and BBC decided to use this name because it is an English translation of an Old Norse word that means kingdom and in Latin it means wife. So, it was an obvious choice for them to choose for their new historical series.  The story focuses on Uhtred, an outlawed Saxon warrior whose father is killed and whose home is seized. Uhtred must choose how to respond to these events, by becoming a loyal ally of the new King Alfred or remaining the enemy of his old homeland.
