Many fans have speculated that Pennsylvania is where the game takes place, with Dunder Mifflin being one of its most iconic landmarks alongside Niagara Falls and Hershey Park. Early levels had Joel stumbling around Pittsburgh trying to find Ellie and Tess in an environment modeled on post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh before their rural hometown is destroyed during a city siege. The state of Pennsylvania is also mentioned by Marlene as the location of the military base which she plans to lead a resistance against.
