The Master series is an American drama series starring Jonathan Pryce, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Joaquin Phoenix which chronicles the life of a World War II veteran who arrives at a small town in post-World War II America looking for work. The series examines the rise and fall of a cult leader named Lancaster Dodd and his eventual rise to power in what is known as “The Cause.” The series, which owes much to the look and feel of The Prisoner, was created by Paul Thomas Anderson who also directed all 6 episodes. The series makes heavy use of visual metaphor; for example, in the first episode, we see a butterfly emerge from its cocoon, not unlike Lancaster’s transformation from a man deemed unfit for duty in World War II to an influential leader.
