It was supposed to be the movie that launched his career. The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman, was supposed to be the start of a new franchise for Universal Pictures. But things didn’t go as planned. The movie was a critical and commercial failure, and it ended up being the biggest flop of Kurtzman’s career.
Why the movie failed is still a mystery. It was a big-budget film, with a budget that Universal estimated to be near $200 million. The studio initially put up $30 million, and eventually shelled out an additional $90 million.Â
