Tokyo Vice, a new movie based on the book of the same name, is coming under fire for allegedly misleading its source material. The book Tokyo Vice is a non-fiction memoir written by American journalist Jake Adelstein. The movie, however, takes many creative liberties with the story and characters, which has led to accusations of plagiarism from Adelstein himself. He claims that while the movie may be entertaining, he feels that it is not based on his book and will “cheat” the audience if it is released under his name.

Tokyo Vice, based on a memoir by Jake Adelstein, has come under fire for its incorrect portrayal of events in the life of the protagonist, Adelstein. Tokyo Vice-director and producer, Michael Mann (Collateral), has acknowledged many of these problems but also says that artistic license was necessary in order to make a feature-length film from such short source material.

He notes that in order to have kept faith with their subject matter would have resulted in an extremely long and complicated film that would have been difficult for audiences to understand.
