Production:
The movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski, and the plot follows the adventures of a young pilot named Maverick. The show takes place in present times and will also focus on drones. Cruise is joined by Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Glen Powell.
Revenue:
The movie is expected to gross a massive $130 million domestically in its opening weekend. Sources say this will be the third-biggest opener of all time for Cruise but also would fall short when compared to other films like Iron Man, which opened with an impressive $174M, and Avengers: Infinity War, which brought in over $257M.
The plot:
“A new generation of pilots has been recruited to fly the next-generation aircraft in a highly competitive training environment set inside an elite flying school.” The plot of the first movie centered on Maverick’s rivalry with Iceman after both graduated from Navy fighter pilot training school at Miramar. The plot also included a romance between Maverick and Charlie, an instructor at Top Gun who later died in a fatal accident during their relationship.
The plot of Top Gun: Maverick has been confirmed by Cruise himself, who described it as “a post-Vietnam War story about fighter pilots.” With filming beginning sometime this fall, we can expect a release date in 2022.
In another plot twist from the first film, Teller is Maverick’s partner instead of Iceman due to Cruise being too old for that role this time around. Harris and Powell will play a pair of instructors at Topgun while Connelly has been cast as the character Charlie.
The Starring cast:
- Miles Teller will play the lead role in Paramount’s “Top Gun” sequel, titled “Top Gun: Maverick,” sources tell Variety.
- In addition to starring in the film, he also will serve as a producer with his producing partner Dylan Clark.
- Jon Hamm is reportedly in talks for one of two new roles in the sequel.
- Teller is taking over the role made famous by Tom Cruise,
- “Hobbs & Shaw” newcomer Levi Meaden will be Maverick’s co-pilot and
- Jon Hamm has been cast as Rick “Jester.” Heatherly, a pilot in command of an A-model Hornet who goes toe-to-toe with Maverick.
- As previously announced, Cruise is reprising his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell alongside fellow original cast member Val Kilmer, who will be returning to the Jerry Bruckheimer film as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
- Jennifer Connelly also stars.
Reviews:
“This sequel is sure to please the die-hard fans. That said, it can’t help but feel like a bit of an empty exercise for everyone else.” Reviews are already starting to come out with some critics praising Cruise’s performance.
