What inspired you to write this book and what message do you hope readers will receive?

I first conceived the idea of a mother and daughter who didn’t know each other, after writing a one-off sketch for my Edinburgh Fringe show called ‘Cake’, which was about one woman’s struggle with the loss of her father.

This then evolved into You Are Not My Mother and I’ve written it to try and raise awareness of the impact that parental bereavement has on families. It’s not just about divorce or death, either – even when parents are together, what happens when you don’t get along? How do you maintain a connection with your partner or children? How do you support each other through it? There’s a lot to learn from our parents.

What are some of the unique elements that make your book stand?

I think one of the main things that make this book stand out is the intergenerational connection between the protagonist, Ms. Devlin, and her daughter Lily. Although Ms. Devlin and Lily were separated when they were young, they now both want to reconnect with each other, which causes an unexpected rift in their current relationship.

I think it’s also important to show what happens when you’ve grown up without your parents – how you find yourself, who you become and how that impacts other people in your life (although I don’t pretend everything is okay between mother and daughter).

Are there any personal connections you feel inform your writing in this book?

I identify a lot with the protagonist, Ms. Devlin. I grew up in a blended family and we all lived in the same house, so I know the struggle that she faces. She has to deal with being resentful toward her daughter although she’s trying to grow as a person herself and that’s something that I understand.

When did you realize this book would be your first?

I’ve been writing for about ten years now, it wasn’t until I was about thirty years old that I got serious about it. At the time, I’d been an avid reader (although not a writer), but one of my friends pushed me over the edge. I wish I could remember his name now, but I know he was a teacher in my college and was amazing – so patient and kind.

What do you think the book is building toward?

The climax of the book escalates when Ms. Devlin visits her daughter for the first time since she has been living in another country, which is incredible to write about. Originally, I’d planned for them to go on a trip together as part of Lily’s journey, but that didn’t happen because I knew it would be difficult writing about them going out on a holiday when they were so emotionally connected. It’s more powerful when they are each facing difficulties with their separate problems.
