Andrew Garfield is set to star in Under the Banner of Heaven, a new FX true-crime thriller premiering in April. The movie is based on the 2022 best-selling book of the same name by Jon Krakauer.

It tells the story of a brother and sister raised as members of the fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormons. When their father dies, they are forced to leave the Church and start life again. The film will be directed by Oscar-nominated River Road’s Maxwell J.D. Snider and written by Krakauer, who has since had the book adapted for the screen by Justin Lendman (The Martian).

Garfield stars as Jim Beckwith, a Mormon lawyer who returns to his hometown in Utah, where he was raised. He is reunited with his sister, Diana (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), raised along with him in the Church but left after their father died.  Diana is now determined to return to the faith while Jim struggles to reconcile his childhood love of going on missions and his later sense of self-loathing at being raised in the Church.

What is the Under the Banner of Heaven series about?

The series is about a detective who is a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ. His sister also is in the Church, and it’s crazy how they are being forced to join that organization. The detective is trying to break free from his religion, while his sister wants to get out because she can’t stand it anymore.

Who are the main characters of Under the Banner of Heaven?

The main character is Detective Andrew Griffin, who lives with his mother, which he doesn’t know about, and his sister Diana (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). He was raised as a Mormon, but now he wants to leave the Church and start over from scratch, but he has some issues which cause him not to want to leave the Church completely.

What themes are explored in the novel, and how does religion play into these themes?

The main theme is that religion doesn’t always bring happiness and peace. This novel’s about a religious family who is very attached to their Church and wants to break free from it but can’t stand up on their feet.

I would recommend this novel to people who like action movies because this novel is set in a criminal world and has some violent scenes. That’s why it’s related to action movies. Also, I like the messages behind it and how the detective struggles with his religious beliefs and tries to figure out if he should stay or leave.

Is it a factual account of real-life events that transpired, or is it more fiction-inspired?

It’s based on real-life events, but the names were changed. When you read the book, it’s hard to believe that this happened, but it happened.

I came up with this because I am a Mormon, and I didn’t particularly appreciate how they treat their children and teach them everything. I felt like they were evilly brainwashing us, and I wanted to tell others about how bad religion is so that we don’t get brainwashed by religion anymore.

Who should be the first audience to watch Under the Banner of Heaven?

People like action movies that are based on true events. People who like religion, I don’t know why but I am into it, and I feel like some people should be in my place so that they can find out how bad religion is.

This novel is a lot better to watch than read because it feels a lot better seeing it than reading all the stuff between it. All the words take up a lot of space in your head and make you unable to sleep at night because of how much you have read that day.
