What Does the Future Hold for Spell Token Prices?

Magic has been around for more than 20 years and the game is showing no signs of slowing down. In 2016, there were more than 3 million Magic players in the U.S. and abroad, an increase of 25% from 2015, with Magic being played by more people than baseball or chess in many countries around the world! In such a flourishing game counterfeiting will inevitably be rife so it’s always important to stay vigilant when purchasing your cards from any vendor. One way to make sure you don’t get duped is by buying Spell Token cards rather than buying spell cards themselves which can be difficult to distinguish between on physical inspection alone.

What are spell tokens?

Spell Tokens are a special kind of solid-color token that represents any generic mana (G, U, R, B). They were introduced in Future Sight by WotC and are one of the innovations from this set that have been adopted into the game as a standard. Each color has its token with matching colored background and lettering so it is easy to distinguish them from other cards in your deck even when they’re face down. The artwork on the tokens is also unique. The spell tokens were intended for use as counter-spells in Limited play formats such as Draft or Sealed where players will not have access to their entire deck at any given time. Approximately eight sets of Magic cards are released in a year and each set has around 250 new cards which mean WotC needs to regularly release new ones. The more cards that get implemented into the game, the more they need to add spell tokens to make sure players have enough mana to cast their spells. Each card type (land, creature, artifact, etc.) needs its token so there are multiple versions of each type.

Who uses Spell Tokens?

The main users for Spell Tokens are people who play Limited formats or those who partake in Commander games since these people need tokens for their spells. Spell Tokens are much easier to identify in Limited formats than they are in Constructed and Sealed play. In a limited environment, players won’t have access to all the cards and will only have access to their sideboard so they’re able to separate the spell tokens from their main deck. It’s easier for players who only play Limited because for those events people need certain cards for their sideboard only which means it’s easy to tell which Spell Tokens belong in those decks. The major usage of Spell Tokens is the Commander format where players are allowed to bring two commanders onto the battlefield along with one spell that is cast from his commander at this time. The Commander format is one of the most popular forms of tournament play and gets quite a few players on its own.

The number of players who participate in the Commander format is usually around 1% each year which means there are about ten thousand people who are playing in this format. It’s fairly easy to tell whether a Spell Token belongs in your deck since you will only be able to have access to your sideboard and you can also identify what color it is from your other cards.

Spell Token Price Prediction

Spell Tokens were introduced in Future Sight and were an attempt to tackle the issue of counterfeiting. The cost of these tokens has not fluctuated a great deal over time on their own but when combined with other cards (mainly dual lands) the price increase has been pretty substantial. This gives us a good foundation from which we can predict prices for Spell Tokens in the future. There are eight types of spell tokens but four of them are from a specific Commander set; this means we can only predict prices for four colors expected to be used in Standard formats such as Modern, Standard, Legacy, and Vintage.
