Yellowstone, starring Sam Elliott and due to air in April of this year, is a new show on the Paramount Network that tells the story of the Yellowstone Caldera eruption in 1883. The show was created by Taylor Sheridan, who was also responsible for Hell or High Water and Sicario. Sam Elliot’s character is well described as “a man who comes to the park with a lot of baggage, a troubled past and a brand new baby.”
The show was in the works prior to the passing of actor Glenn Howerton. According to The Hollywood Reporter, although there was no intention to cancel the show, it will not be aired this season. The production of Yellowstone has already taken place in Montana and Wyoming with post-production taking place currently in Los Angeles.

What inspired you to write the Yellowstone Series?
The series is inspired by the Yellowstone Caldera eruption. It is a real-life event that took place in 1883. The series revolves around the circumstances that led up to this event, and the effects of this cataclysmic eruption on the people of its surrounding area.
What role did you play during the writing phase?
I played a very large and important role in storytelling; I worked with series creator Taylor Sheridan to construct and write each season of Yellowstone based on a number of historical documents, oral histories, 19th and 20th-century newspaper articles and other primary source material. I also consulted with park rangers and historians familiar with the region who provided valuable insight into what life was like for these hardy souls back then.
What was your process for writing the series Yellowstone?
I worked closely with series creator Taylor Sheridan to construct the outline of each season, and to ensure that it was historically accurate, before beginning work on the scripts for each episode. The cast is superb! I’m particularly impressed by Kevin Costner as John Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler. They embody their characters so well; it’s a joy to see these characters come to life on screen.
How does the series reflect your personal beliefs?
Yellowstone reflects many of my personal beliefs: the fragility of life, the need to look past differences to achieve a common goal, and the importance of cognizant awareness. I spent long hours on both lands and in the archives in Washington. I spent time with park rangers, historians, and other professionals closely familiar with Yellowstone to get a better understanding of what life was like in 1883 when the Yellowstone Caldera erupted. I also consulted historical documents and oral histories that were available to me online at various public libraries.
Do you have any plans to write a sequel to the series?
I am currently developing a sequel to this series with the same team that brought it to life. The sequel, titled Yellowstone: Winter’s Fury takes place in Yellowstone National Park thirty years after the events of Yellowstone: A Volcanic Legacy, and features the return of important characters from the first series. It is currently slated for release in 2022.
